I’m the last person on earth to qualify as a movie advisor or critic—I don’t watch and analyze movies like that. Ask my husband. This is purely for lighthearted fun.
My two favorite movie genres are action thrillers and romantic comedies, but after pregnancy, I just can’t seem to handle heavy movies as much as I did before. So naturally, my movie preference has shifted more towards rom coms.
And honestly, I don’t mind it.
Why I Love Rom Coms
Rom coms are cheerful, fun, unrealistically realistic, and never get old. They’re also the best kind of background friend (I like to have one playing in the background while I write). But beyond all of that, there are a few things I especially love about them.
Witty and Outrageous Banter
I absolutely adore great chemistry on screen. The witty banter between the male and female leads—it’s like art but with words.
And you can’t forget the leads’ best friends, coworkers, enemies and their outrageous banter. They say things you would never hear in real life, bringing both small chuckles and big, rolling-on-the-floor kind of laughter.
I love it all.
Hot Vacation Spots
Another reason I love rom coms? They take me places.
Especially because of the season of life that we’re in, it’s thrilling when my movie takes me to a vacation island or some exotic cultural expedition. Whether it’s a family vacation to the American island of Maui, a destination wedding in Phuket, or a personal retreat to Marrakesh, Morocco, I’m vicariously traveling and living through the vacations of the characters on screen.
It’s OK if it’s a B-rated movie. If it features a vacation spot, it’s worth my time.
Heartwarming Celebration Endings
And then there’s the ending.
The somewhat high-tension drama finally resolves, and all there’s left is the celebration—a cozy Christmas dinner gathering with family, a school dance or an outdoor concert with neighbors and friends, or a fun wedding reception with loved ones.
The final scene of gathering and celebration gives me all the feels I’m looking for: nostalgia because the movie is coming to an end, yearning because I want that kind of gathering for myself, and a heartwarming smile because it’s just a sweet way to close out the movie.
Two Rom Coms I Actually Recommend
And while I love rom coms in general, there are two movies that stand out from the rest. I usually only watch movies once, but these two? I’ll enjoy for a lifetime. I’ll have them playing in the background. And I’ll actually recommend them.
Something’s Gotta Give
If you like The Holiday, The Intern, or The Parent Trap, you will like this one because it’s by the same director, Nancy Meyers.
It’s an oldie, but I only discovered it a few years ago on an international Delta flight back home. Lovely and fun banter-filled chemistry between the 60-something male and female leads is what really carries the film.
Voicemails for Isabelle
A fresh 2026 Netflix drop—and a movie so good that it inspired me to start writing a novel of my own.
This movie beautifully blends grief with romance and comedy, making the theme of grief feel more digestible and hopeful. The real winner of my heart was the celebration at the end, which impressively captures notes of courage, hope, and love.
I’ve rewatched the ending I don’t know how many times.
